Kitties in a personal home feline sanctuary in TN looking for a sitter!

Introduction

My name is Ani Hawkinson. I am retired but have spent the last few years overseas on various teaching grants. I was a foreign language educator for 20 years, and, later, a naturopathic physician. I have a weak spot for animals in need. If I see a stray animal that I can help, I will bring it home. Until recently, my rescue work was limited to cats since I am allergic to dogs. For thirty years, in the U.S., I did feral cat rescue and rehab out of my home in Vermont. Then, two years ago, while in Nepal, where there are 27,000 street dogs in Kathmandu alone, I simply couldn't not do something to help, despite my allergies. I brought back 6 puppies from there, all of whom now have loving homes. The next year, I brought 5 dogs back from Tajikistan, along with 5 cats, one of whom went to a loving home. I kept the remaining four, having rescued each of them from the brink of death, I got rather attached to them. 4 of the dogs were placed in homes, and I kept one dog who is now living with her trainer for the year learning how to be a service dog. I am now living in a renovated (still in progress) church in rural Tennessee where my rescues can live safely. The dogs I rescue go to forever homes, as well as some of the cats. But many cats will remain with me for their lifetimes. They are all rescues from either Kenya, Tajikistan, Vermont, Tennessee, or Florida. I am also supporting another 20 cats in Kenya, with food and medical care. It is heart-warming to watch people who previously did not have the resources to care for strays step up to the plate and take them into their homes when they have the resources to take care of them properly.

Home & location

Coalmont is about 1 hour northwest of Chattanooga and two hours south of Nashville. A quiet community of less than 1000 residents, it is a great country locations within an hour or two of big city amenities. My home (previously a church) is located on one acre, which is surrounded by fields with horses, deer, goats, local stray dogs (some of whom I have already rescued and will be taking to their forever homes in July), on two sides, belonging to one neighbor, and a sweeping lawn with fields beyond on the third side, belonging to another neighbor. The front of the building faces the road which, due to the history of stray dogs in the area, is called Dogtown Road. The property is surrounded have a purrfect cat-containment fence surrounding the acre of the property where they can play and run. The main living area is what used to be the main chapel of the church. It is 2500 square feet, with a breath-taking knotty pine cathedral ceiling (which is why I bought the building) and knotty pine floors which I had installed. There are tall narrow glass windows and I have added 8 glass doors so there is lots of light. There are also 10 chandeliers that light up the space so much that I have disabled the bulbs in some of them but any house-sitter who wanted more light could enable them all. The main hall is divided into different functional areas using only furniture. That is, I have not added any interior walls. There is a living "room", a "bedroom", a meditation/yoga "room", a dressing "room", a dining "room", a kitty play "room". There is a big wood stove in the main hall that heats the whole space. A huge kitchen spans the entire width of the building at the back of the building. I have a vast collection of international cookbooks, an 8-burner gas range, and a grill out on the deck, and lots of countertop so if you like to cook, you'll be well-equipped. There is an entry hall at the front of the building, with one room on each side, each converted from two smaller rooms that the church used for various purposes. One is now a combined bathroom and laundry room, with a Bowflex tredclimber, sauna, colon hydrotherapy equipment, and a large pet-washing tub. The other is a guest room and office. This area brings the total square footage of the building up to 2800. It is a very spacious place to live. What was previously the baptismal area has been converted into a storage area. I will store all my breakables, as well as clothing from some of the closets and dressers there, so you can store your belongings safely in the furniture in the main hall. Some of the kitties think open suitcases are litter boxes. The guilty parties must have been cleaners in a previous lifetime; they do not like things that have not been put away! The only other building on the property is a 20x10 foot shed, apparently a must-have in rural Tennessee because you will see them everywhere, and my neighbors to the right have half a dozen or so of out buildings of various sizes. My closest neighbors, Ronnie (80) and Mabel (79) will be your go-to people for local history. The house they live in is the one Mabel grew up in. Mabel loves knickknacks and it is fun to look at her ever-growing plethora of indoor and outdoor treasures lovingly culled from auctions and flea markets. Mabel and Ronnie are always ready for a chat; she will be happy to see you any time you come by. I have added a 480 square foot deck on one side, with a cat cage under it for litter boxes and garden supplies. Although all the main renovations are completed, certain cosmetic features are incomplete, and unlikely to be done before the fall sit: painting in the two newly renovated front rooms and wainscoting throughout the building. The main hall also will eventually be repainted but that is down the road, I am afraid, along with the installation of a vegetable garden which I hope to eventually have. As a result, there are panels of wood for the wainscotting stored in certain corners of the building, out-of-the-way. The original signage for the church is still out in front, mainly because I haven't yet found someone to remove it, but it makes it easy to find and another sign for the church is at the corner of Dogtown Road and Highway 56, where you will be driving in from: Way of the Cross church. There are many lovely well-maintained hiking trails nearby and, should you happen to own an ATV, a large OHV park is just down the road, and you can drive to it in your ATV. There is a large parking area, so if you have a trailer with an ATV, there is plenty of room to park.

Responsibilities

NOTE: There will be 17 cats in total for this sit. I wanted to get the listing up as soon as possible and will be adding pics and info for all of the cats as soon as possible. 1. Food and water: Fill dry food feeding and water stations as needed 2. Litter: There are litter boxes which need to be scooped daily; some are in the building, more are outside under the deck. 3. Dust bunnies: Dust and fur balls show up in between so, depending upon the sitter's preference, a little vacuuming might be a good idea. I will leave two working vacuums for this purpose. 4. Watering: Plants. Because it is cold in the winter, plants that usually live outside will be indoors and need watering. They will all be in wire dog crates to protect them from the cats. 5. Love: Certainly kittie cuddles and playtime would be greatly appreciated but it is not required. 6. Watch out for any signs of ill health and transport to local vet. A credit card will be on file. 7. The sitter should have What's App as I will be overseas and this app makes it easy to call at no cost as long as internet available. 8. I love sitters who keep me updated as to their experience as well as how the animals are doing. The cats are fairly self-sufficient, all have lived for prolonged time (due to having been stranded in different places -- VT, Tajikistan -- for almost a year because of COVID) and with minimal supervision. There are enough of them, all of whom don't always like each other, for them to entertain themselves either playing or quarreling when they aren't snoozing or grooming. Lots of cat toys are about and should be left out for them to find in different locations. * One cat is on daily medication for anxiety who he is very easy to pill. Ideally, the sitter should be someone who knows how to pill a cat, but I can also show any newcomer what to do because he is so easy to pill.

Ani did a fabulous job of conveying her expectations in her book and was available on what's app throughout as she was across the world. I enjoyed each personality of the cats and will miss them all. I would happily do a future sit!

People thought we were a little crazy when we said we were going to Florida to look after 9 cats, but the truth is, once you got into a routine, 9 cats was very manageable. We got to know and love all their different personalities. Ani left a very detailed guide book which made our stay easy, and helped out immensely during the time she was unable to communicate with us. We will miss the gang of cats and the people we met in the community. Thanks, Ani, for the opportunity to look after your cats and your house.

We had the pleasure of taking care of Ani's 9 wonderful rescue cats, two kittens and 7 adults for 3 months. Cat love all abound! Their different personalities were wonderful to discover, to love and to spoil a bit with playing, brushing, cuddles or evening snuggle times. One of them needed medication, but with a little treat afterwards he seemed to enjoy taking his meds and ventured in every evening to volunteer;-) We miss them very much, no more lap time in the evening with one or two of them, it could get a bit crowded at times:-) Ani's beautiful home is in a 55 plus retirement community with lots of possibilities to spend your free time. We biked everywhere and enjoyed the pools and the many sports amenities. Ani left detailed instructions about the cats, house, mail and plant care and was always only a message away for any questions we might have. We were in daily contact about everything going on. Given the opportunity we would be back in a heart beat to meet our wonderful cat gang again.

We has such a great time taking care of Ani's home and sweet loving kitties. Ani has a beautiful house in a lovely neighborhood, great for walking ,biking golfing and swimming. Even though she was abroad and we never actually got to meet her in person, Anis communication and organization was impeccable. She made it very easy for us to take good care of her darlings . These are some of the sweetest cats we have ever had the pleasure to love, they are very affectionate, very mellow and each one has a splendid unique personality. We loved hanging out with them.
