Cosy apartment with view of the canal and two sweet cats

Introduction

Hi! We are Eline and Daniël, and our cats Sisko and Martok. They are two girls, one is 12 and the other 2 years old. We live in a one-bedroom apartment on the ground floor on a historic canal in Leiden, The Netherlands. Recently, Eline moved to the UK for work, and Daniël visits often. Unfortunately, that means that Sisko and Martok have to stay home alone, for a week or up to ten days sometimes. We have worked with catsitters who come twice per day to feed them and play with them, but are cats are happiest when there are people living with them. That is why we would like to open up our home for experienced animal lovers.

Home & location

Ground floor apartment with high ceilings and wood floors on a quiet street in the city centre. Large living room and built-in kitchen with fridge, freezer, stovetop, dishwasher, oven. The living room windows look onto the canal. TV and extensive library with books in Dutch and English. Large bathroom with clawfoot bathtub. Office space and bed as mezzanine above the office space. Skylights in bedroom and bathroom, separate toilet. Leiden has many cozy restaurants and bars, open air market on Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday, three cinemas, many museums. There are many parks in and around the city, and the dunes and beach are a bike ride away.

Responsibilities

Sisko and Martok usually eat three times per day, but two times per day works as well. They eat wet food mostly, but after their evening meal they get some dry food in a food puzzle. Sisko just started a diet supporting renal function. They have always eaten in separate rooms, since Martok is a much quicker water and would steal food from Sisko's plate. Both cats like to play with the fishing rod toy and pieces of string. Martok has much more energy as she is still very young (2 years old) but Sisko really likes to play as well. Sisko likes to sit in your lap, make biscuits, and fall asleep there. Martok is very affectionate but doesn't have much time for sitting on laps :). During the night they are both quiet, but they will let you know when it's time for breakfast. We have plants that would need watering depending on how much time we are away. They typically can cope with a week without watering.

We really enjoyed our short two days stay at Daniël and Eline’s place. Sisko and Martok are lovely cats, who make a good company for each other! We would be happy to return here again and spend more time with them to get to know them better! Upon arrival Daniël and Eline showed us around the apartment and gave detailed instructions regarding the cats and their feeding routine. The apartment is very cosy and has everything you need! It is located in the city center, with nice cafes and shops in walking distance!

Eline communicated very clearly and friendly, we also had a video call before my stay and discussed all the details about the flat and the cats. In addition, Eline and Daniel provided me with a lot of pictures and information regarding the cats and the flat, because Daniel had already left when I arrived in Leiden, which was also very helpful. During my stay, Eline always responded very quickly to questions. In any case, we could have alway made another video call if something had been unclear. Martok and Sisko are great cats - each of them very different and with their own special character. The three of us quickly got used to each other and had a great time together. The flat is perfectly located if you want to be in the very heart of Leiden and explore the city. Leiden is (to me) a very beautiful and lively city with an incredible number of cafés etc, but also, if you want, a lot of interesting culture like museums. If, like me, you love nature, you are at the seaside and in the dunes in about 40 minutes by bike (Katwiijk and Wassenaar) or in 15 minutes by bus. The flat is cosy and has everything you need. The only thing you should know and what Eline clearly communicates is that you can only open the living room windows a crack at a time so that the cats don't run away (but there is a skylight in the sleeping room that you can leave open, if it doesn't rain, of course). That's important to know if you're someone who always needs a lot of fresh air (and this also might only be important if you spent a lot of time inside the flat). But you can also just sit outside the flat by the canal from time to time and enjoy your coffee, like I did (when it's warm enough of course ;-)). I can highly recommend Eline as a pet parent!

I had a wonderful experience taking care of Martok and Sisko at Eline's house in Leiden. The city is amazing, full of charm, and very easy to get around. Eline's house is incredibly comfortable and equipped with everything necessary for a pleasant and hassle-free stay. From the beginning, communication with Eline was perfect. She provided all the necessary information and was available for any questions I had, making the process very smooth and worry-free. Martok and Sisko are adorable cats, calm, and very well-behaved. It was a pleasure to take care of them and spend time with them. Their company made my stay even more special. In summary, I would not hesitate to recommend Eline and her lovely cats to any sitter. It was a perfect experience in every aspect. Thank you so much, Eline, for trusting me!
