Characterful detached home with panoramic views over the local somerset country

Introduction

We are Carey and Caroline, retired from our medical careers, and embracing having time to travel and do all those things there was never time for before! We live in a lovely 4 bedroom detached house, in a rural setting, with magnificent panoramic views. The living and kitchen space is open plan , very light, with views in all directions. The garden is spacious but we don't expect any gardening, apart from some selected watering of vegetables during the summer.

Home & location

We live in a 4 bed roomed [one currently used as a store room], detached characterful family house, with 3 bathrooms and a large open plan kitchen/breakfast area and living space . This includes our garden room which has a wall of folding sliding glass windows looking out over magnificent views of open countryside in a southwesterly direction, as well as a cosy sitting room with a log fire place and smart TV . The gas fired aga is on during the colder weather, making it very cosy. There is a separate utility and boot room area, where the dog and cats sleep, and dry off after wet/muddy walks. There is a back door into this area, which accesses the large garden. There is a tennis court at the rear of the property. There are many walks in all directions straight from the house. Our nearest neighbours are in a hamlet across the road, and are very friendly and helpful. We are one mile from the nearest village, Charlton Mackrell, which is active and friendly with a pub and large recreational playing field. We are also one mile from the a thriving local town [Somerton], which has many useful shops including a supermarket, wholefood deli, fruit and veg shop, large hardware store, stationers, gift shops and several cafes, pubs, and takeaways. There is a large free local car park. The nearest mainline railway station [Castle Cary] is 12 minutes away by car. There is no public transport to our house. The 2 fields surrounding us are ours, but looked after by neighbours, who keep their sheep in the fields.

Responsibilities

The dog and cats are not allowed upstairs, which is achieved by keeping the hall to next room closed at all times. Robbie is a gentle natured, loving, but slightly anxious labrador - definitely bottom of the pack around other dogs. All dogs love him, and he is very friendly. Occasionally he will bark at other dogs if he feels threatened, so I tend to distract him especially around alpha type large dogs when out on a walk. He is a delight to walk as he has good recall, and tends to stay with you keeping you in sight at all times. He doesnt look his age and will happily walk for miles. He sleeps the rest of the day! He is used to one good walk [minimum 45 mins] a day. He requires a special hypoallergenic dry dog food - twice daily, as well as a tablet in the mornings to manage an overactive gut. He tends to shed a lot of hair like many labradors, and I hoover downstairs 2-3 x weekly. Bagel is a large long haired black cat who purrs constantly. He is quite lazy and loves to be petted. He goes out quite a lot, and usually comes in to sleep in the utility area at night. He may need removing from Robbie's bed at night as Robbie is too timid to oust him! Dave is a very anxious rescue cat, and sometimes goes off for several days. He loves to be petted and is very friendly once he is confident around you. He also sleeps in the utility area. We fill the cat bowls with dried cat food twice daily, and they graze feed whenever they want to eat. There is a cat flap in the back door, but you need to make sure they are not in the kitchen/living area when you go to bed. The 2 hibiscus plants in the garden room need watering twice weekly [1 - 1 1/2 litres each], and a few other plants a small amount of water weekly.

We had a truly wonderful time at Caroline and Carey’s home. Caroline and Carey were really clear and great communicators from the outset. We had the pleasure of meeting them before they left and we had a comprehensive run through of the house and animals. They had kindly left us homemade apple juice and toys for the kids. Robbie (dog) is a gentle soul who loves all the best things, long walks in the beautiful surrounds, and a tickle under his arm in the evening. Dave and Bagel (cats) are mostly independent and came as they pleased. We managed a couple of cuddles by the end of our stay. The house is even better than the photos. The views and feel of the place is really special. We had lots of great walks from the house to Somerton or Charlton Mackerell. The area has plenty to see, national trust properties, Glastonbury tor and the air museum were our top picks. We would recommend to anyone lucky enough to go.

We spent 5 days looking after Robbie the lovely Lab, Bagel and Dave the cats, for Caroline and Cary. We arrived the evening before the sit to meet Caroline, who made us a delicious supper and this gave us the opportunity to meet our housemates and learn about the house. Robbie is a very gentle but quite a nervous dog, but we were pleased that the next day, after Caroline had left on her trip, he was bounding up to us and seemed to know we were friends! We went on some lovely long walks, and he was so well-behaved, walking quietly beside us on the lead. For the rest of the day he was happy to snooze in his bed or potter round the garden. I must admit, we were both a bit in love; he’s such a lovely boy! Bagel is a lovely, fluffy, purry cat who loves to be petted – but when I approached with the brush he turned tail and ran. We saw Dave, but only through the windows where he sized us up in safety. He came in for food, but disappeared through the cat flap the minute we came near. Caroline warned us that they may bring in ‘presents’ but that only happened once in 5 days. We absolutely loved the house! We are proud to say that all our meals were cooked on the Aga, and it kept the kitchen lovely and warm. Our favourite room was the sun/garden room, with the most amazing views across the valley. We saw Fieldfares in the hedges, a green woodpecker eating the apples, and a blackcap literally feet away on the terrace. Shame we’re not here for the Big Garden Birdwatch!! Our favourite walk was at RSPB Ham Wall where we saw kingfishers, marsh harriers, jays, great spotted woodpeckers, egrets, herons and reed buntings, to name a few. Robbie enjoyed the thought of chasing the squirrels! We had a delicious Sunday lunch at The Halfway House, Pitney – a ‘proper’ pub with very friendly locals. We thoroughly enjoyed this sit, and would love to come back in the summer for more walks with Robbie, and to really enjoy this beautiful house and wonderful garden. Thank you, Caroline and Cary, for inviting us to this sit.
