Responsibilities

- Give Gracie daily exercise. The dog park is very close and all her buddies go there at 9am. Going to the Dog park in the morning is her favorite thing to do. She likes to race if you go down the spiral stairs on the back of the house. - Depending on the seasons, we may have our garden running. we may ask you to keep the water reservoirs full. Bonus: You get to eat the veggies. - The outdoor orchids in the trees like a brief shower from the hose each morning. Not needed if it rains. - Every few days the Orchids on the lanai will need morning watering too. They are on a variable schedule, so we will group them with specific instructions. - Finally, we are in an area that experiences windstorms during hurricane season (June-October). In the 3 years we've lived here, there has never been the needs to evacuate or any long-term power outages. However, we feel it is best for those applying to understand the just-in-case hurricane procedure up front. - - You will need to slide closed a few shutters. We will close most before we go, but those that light your bedroom, the living room, and your bathroom will need to be closed by you. There is a walkway all the way around the house and they simply slide on a rail. Easy Peasy. -- If there is a significant sustained wind event (35+ mph), we ask you to bring in the plants from the lanai. -- In the event of a sustained power outage, there is a generator that will need to be started and plugged in. The plug allows the generator to power essentials like the freezers, refrigerators and a portable air conditioner that will ensure your comfort. The cool thing is that all you do is plug it in. the electrician has already done the hard part :) The neighbors all live here year-round and are eager to assist if needed.

We had the best time in Big Pine Key. Karina and Brad were really fun to meet, talk to and communicate with during their travels. They set us up in their guest bedroom with a queen bed with the bathroom down the hall. Their spot right next to the canal is really cool we got to see so many birds, fish, jellyfish as well as beautiful sunsets from their screened in porch. Getting to see and care for all the exotic orchids and plants was a treat too. Gracie is so adorable and has such a cute and unique personality. She makes a lot of different sounds and loved to talk to us. It’s interesting because her “voice” changed with her moods and wants and even after almost two weeks surprised us with new sounds. She is the only dog I’ve ever known to eat a few bites of her food and stop to drink water in between bites. She takes her time to eat instead of scarfing it down all at once. If you ask her if she wants to race she will start spinning in circles and take off down the stairwell and run around to meet you at the other stairwell. She is so happy in the morning and has bursts of energy throughout the day after napping on the couch. She would jump up and come with us anytime she heard the sliding door open. She would randomly come up to me and lick me on my legs in the morning or if I was eating at the island. She loved greeting me when I came out of the bedroom and we would play together. She slept between us and often would lay her head on our legs or on my hip or stomach. Lastly, we enjoyed the routine of taking her to the park in the morning and meeting all of her friends. We ended up making new friends ourselves through the dog park crew, it was such a blast. I miss seeing her big smile and her general fun loving and playful disposition. Thank you Karina and Brad for having us. We are so grateful for our time there!

In short, this was a magical sit! Karina and Brad are incredible hosts, they took us snorkeling and showed us the Keys from their boat when we arrived. That was followed by a delicious dinner of fresh fish they caught the day before, how lucky were we? It was a perfect beginning to a great week. Grace was the best sidekick. Her favorite activities are racing you down the stairs and playing "mits" with the oven mits. She gets excited every time they come out. She's easy to care for because she expresses what she wants. She tells you when she needs more water, food, to go outside, or to play. We really bonded with her and are already missing her. Her daily routine involves going to the dog park in the morning which we enjoyed, especially because the other dog owners were very welcoming. They gave us all sorts of ideas on what to do in the area, and we felt like honorary members of their community for the week. The location and house are quite special. The kitchen is beautifully laid out, and it was a treat to cook in. Karina has an extensive succulent and orchid collection. I was a little intimidated at first, but she gave very clear directions on how to care for them and all went smoothly. We enjoyed Brad, Karina, and Grace immensely and can't thank them enough for their hospitality. Their communication was responsive and directions comprehensive and clear. This sit is the exact sort of fun adventure—paired with connecting with lovely people and a charming dog—that makes this site truly great.
