Central York, 10 day house sit, late June with 2 year Female Golden Retriever

Introduction

Hello our names are Ben & Fliss and we are a young couple that live in York with our golden retriever Maple. Maple is 2 and she enjoys adventures out to the seaside and hiking. We have been training maple to walk on the lead without pulling, running away uncontrollably to other dogs and recall. We are leaving to go on holiday abroad for 1 week from 28th June - 6th July and are looking for someone to stay from Friday evening around 6pm to Saturday evening around 6pm and take care of maple for us whilst continuing her training. We are looking for house sitters who have looked after large active dogs before and can commit to doing a crossover with us. I.e. turn up 1hr early to go on a joint walk, show round the house etc.

Responsibilities

You need to be used to looking after a large active dog! Morning: Maple likes to jump up on the bed at 7am(ish) and give you cuddles, then we get ready for her morning walk. We spend 40-60 mins continuously walking around the beck & surrounding fields. Once home and dried off, we give her a kibble breakfast (waiting at least 15 minutes since coming home from the walk). Working from home throughout the day, maple is kept close by, she needs attention throughout the day - playing tug or sniffing round the lounge for scents or treats. She usually sleeps in her bed or armchair. Let maple out in the garden every few hours for the toilet. Ensure there are no objects (leather goods, any items etc) in reach of maple (on dining table or food on top of the kitchen counters) when you go out / when around the house. Maple does not normally chew but can do if she is not stimulated enough. Evening: Walk Maple continuously around 6pm for another 45mins, once home waiting 15 minutes we then feed her a kibble dinner. Then we hang out in the lounge and play and chill on the sofa until the evening. After a final bedtime wee, we go upstairs to bed, where she sleeps in her own bed at the foot of ours. Training: - During her walks she is kept on a long-line, and keep her attention on us by calling her name and rewarding her with praise or treats if she responds positively. - We ask her to sit at regular spots (e.g. before crossing the road) - When she is 3m+ away we invite her to come back to us, training recall (about 5-10 times during the walk). - We play with her on the walk encouraging her to tug toys - At home, we encourage Maple to sit in her bed using a bed command, and praise her when all 4 paws are on the bed. Plants to be watered 1 x per week (6 plants downstairs, 2 plants upstairs) Please send us Maple pup-dates! We love seeing her on photos and miss her greatly whilst we are away.

We really enjoyed sitting for Maple! Fliss and Ben were wonderful - they gave clear and transparent instructions, communicated well and were so welcoming. We were grateful to meet up with them a bit early to be shown around and how to go about walking Maple. Their home was clean and very comfortable and we really appreciated their trust in us, this being our first sit. Maple is such a sweetheart - she was really well behaved, always up for cuddles and was easy to walk. She definitely needed the physical and mental activity but we loved it as it got us active and made her happy. We had a lot of fun and would definitely house sit for this family again! Thanks so much!

We had such a lovely time in York with Maple, who is an absolute sweetheart! Ben and Fliss made us very welcome and showed us some good spots for walking as well as recommending some great coffee shops and things to do in the area. They stayed in contact with us all the time so we always felt supported. Maple is still young but is super laid back and just a pleasure to spend time with. She walks on a lead with no pulling and even kept me company on a few jogs, which made exercising so much more fun! She loves her treats and her morning cuddles, and she loves to play tug. We hope to stay in contact with this lovely family.
