Comfortable home, lovable dogs, hiking and exploring in the Black Hills of SD

Introduction

My husband, Greg, and I live in a modest log home that is adjacent to the Black Hills National Forest near Rapid City, South Dakota. Our “Outback” has unlimited space for hiking with our beloved golden retrievers, Sally and Penny. There are also plenty of spots nearby, including Pactola Reservoir, which is just 10 minutes away. I try to train my dogs to accompany me on open water swims (always a work-in-progress), but they do love to go to the beaches and chew on sticks and swim all over the place. We are mostly retired and we both have always had dogs. We are dedicated to providing the best life possible for them. Because we have pets, we ask our sitters to stay with us for a full day and night before we depart. It's important the the girls have time to get comfortable with you before we leave. Fortunately, they are both love sponges and readily make friends with new people. Greg usually takes Penny & Sal for a 1-2 hour hike in the early morning. This is his main exercise. I’m a master swimmer, and my work outs are over lunch. When I get back home from town, the girls are waiting with the obvious expectation that we will be going out soon! So, around 2 o’clock they start giving me the puppy eyes and and we’re off again. We have some pretty spots along Rapid Creek and they love to explore. Upon our return, we all cuddle up on the big bed and take a power nap! Starting in May, we begin cultivating our flower and vegetable gardens. We live on a half acre and are lucky to have the space to grow food. So staying here May through September entails routine watering and harvesting of items as they ripen. Typically, green beans and tomatoes, lettuce… and of course creating beautiful bouquets to enjoy! Nothing too huge. Most of the work gets done in May and after that it’s just maintenance. We do live in a neighborhood of about 10 homes. There is a trail that leads to the national forest through the gate. We have two mountain bikes that are available for use. Penny and Sal like to go biking, but generally a person needs to descend slowly to keep them from flat-out running; our Outback trails are mostly all up - and then down. In summer, it's generally too hot to take them biking unless you are on a trail along a stream. They also love to swim and there is a nice beach about 10 minutes from our home. In the winter, the Black Hills provide reasons to snow bike, cross-country or alpine skiing, and, hiking-with or without snowshoes. It is one of my favorite times of year!

Home & location

We live in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Our home is a 2200 sq ft log home on 1/2 acre, in a small neighborhood situated adjacent to the Black Hills National Forest. We can walk through a gate and be in the forest. We like to hike and mountain bike this area. We typically take Penny and Sally there our for their morning adventure for 1-2 hours daily. There are other hiking areas nearby. Rapid Creek flows through the canyon in which we live. There is a gorgeous reservoir just 10 minutes away, and Rapid City is 10 minutes the other direction. Our guest rooms are in the basement. Each room has a large egress window with privacy shades. One has a double bed, the other is a queen. There is also a bathroom with a walk-in shower, and a half-bath and master bath on the main level.

Responsibilities

Penny & Sal are fed twice a day, usually around 6:00 am (or when you get up) and 4:00pm. Treats are o.k. but not too many, because Sally tends to gain weight, especially when it's not hunting season. Brushes are in the green cabinet in living room. If it's muddy outside, you can pop them in the dog shower by the back door. It has a spray hose to get just the legs, or belly, or do the whole body spa. Towels for them are worn-looking & mixed in with the others in cabinet above stairwell. Daily exercise is key for these two characters! At a minimum, 2 hours outside with you each day! Sally especially tends to wait to poop until you take her out, so if you can get them out around 8 or 8:30, that would be ideal. I will provide options for places to go in the area so you'll be able to experience the beauty of the Black Hills every day! Our yard has an underground fence with collars. When out in the forest, they will stay close, but should they wander out of your view, they also come to four short blasts of the whistle. As a rule, we don't let either of them eat bones, which they are very good at finding when out hiking in the forest. They are both very social beings and love to play with people. At night, Penny approaches Greg with a stuffed bear and nudges him, then goes into a crouch, expecting a chase to begin. So around they go, and then Sal gets a teddy and joins in. Sal mostly will want you to play tug with her and rumble with Sal when she streaks by, but eventually Sally rolls over on her back and wants you to rub her belly while trying to grab her teddy bear every so often. And so it goes.... They love Happy Hour and they sit down and pay attention, because they know they get hor d'oeuvres! For them, that's usually crackers split in fourths or pieces of tortilla chips. It's our thing, though, so if you enjoy a beer before dinner, do plan on having some extra chips nearby! They also love watching TV in the basement with us during the evening. Penny usually settles in between us on the double recliner. We do have multiple gardens growing in the summer. The big one has a hail screen, drip hoses on a timer and an electric fence. The others are watered with a regular hose, which can be positioned and left to spray for 15 minutes in the various parts of the gardens. We have an energy efficient wood burning fireplace and we heat with it all winter. We invite you to do the same. Additional heating options are installed: the basement has thermostats in each bedroom and a single unit on a remote control, just like the ones in the master bedroom and living room. Bathrooms have floor heat. We also have three units for cooling. With a log home and the basement cooling system, we don't use it much. The basement is always cool. On the main floor, we find that if we open up the windows in the evening, we awaken to a comfortably cool home that stays that way throughout the day. We encourage energy conservation by hanging laundry on the deck rails and/or clothes line all year-round here. We rarely use our electric dryer and find that folding laundry out on deck as the sky changes colors at night to be a very enjoyable experience!

Beautiful setting in the Black Hills with two Goldens who will also serve as your tour guides on the multiple trails right outside your front door! Sally and Penny are two of the most loving dogs you'll ever meet and Ann and Greg were such gracious and informative hosts. We were invited to arrive a couple days before the sit and they toured us around the area and made wonderful recommendations on places to visit and sights to see. We highly recommend this sit! -Phyl n' Jer

Val took good care of our house & dogs. She made sure they went for off-leash adventures daily, and seemed to develop good relationships while she was caring for them. Penny especially liked getting into her van while Val was packing to leave! The home was clean & organized upon our return. She stayed an extra few night with us, arriving early, and she was a helpful and pleasant guest.
