LONG TERM Off-grid farm: gorgeous views, great wifi & cuddly animals
Introduction
At the moment, we're looking for long term sitters (minimum 3 months, maximum TBD). We're moving to Lisbon for some times as Francois got a new professional opportunity. We want to keep the farm, with the idea of coming back once in a while on weekends and to live here again in 1 or 2 years. Even if we come back on weekends, the sitters would still have their own space and privacy. For that, we need someone reliable to take care of our farm. We have nearly perfect and unlimited wifi; this opportunity is ideal for someone looking for a place to work remotely without paying for rent or utilities. About us: Shahnaz (my wife), Arianna (our baby girl, born in Feb 2021, Zara (our 2nd daughter, born in April 2024) and myself, Francois, are the proud owners of beautiful quinta nestled at the foot of Serra da Estrela mountain range and national park in Central Portugal. In 2018, we took over this farm that was abandoned for 15 years. We are in the slow process of reviving it, clearing shrubs and brambles, planting new trees, and trying to create a badass veggie garden. What we do is inspired by permaculture principles and an ecosystem approach, and one of our goals is to become more self-sufficient.

Our place, "Casa Beatrix" is a farm (or "quinta" as they say in Portuguese) nestled at the foot of Serra da Estrela mountain range and ntural park in Central Portugal. The whole property is off-grid. We live in one of two tiny houses, and are renovating two other old stone buildings. Part of our vision is to turn this already amazing place into an edible landscape / food forest, increase biodiversity, and strengthen drought resilience. Our place is incredibly peaceful, but boasts a perfect wifi signal! Not every provider has coverage, but we have wifi and barring a storm that sometimes interrupts service for a few hours, it's good enough for Shahnaz to work remotely and for a few people to stream movies at the same time. Other than that... We're a 20 min walk or 5 min drive to a pristine and untouched piece of the river Mondego - yes you can swim in it, and nothing beats that in the summer. It's a 30 min walk or 5 min drive to the closest village for local shops, bars, restaurants, a bank, and a post office. It's a 10 min drive to a nice lake where you can swim and relax. There are numerous historical villages in the area, that all organize their own medieval fair (summer) or seasonal celebration around chestnuts for example in the fall. We're by the Serra da Estrela natural park, which means breathtaking views (don't even get me started on the night sky!), walks, Portugal's highest point, and skiing about an hour away.

Here's what we expect from a house/farm sitter: 1. Feed the animals: Cats and dogs get fed morning (7-8am) and evening (5pm); donkeys (5pm); chickens (5pm) 2. Water plants as needed (i.e. if it rains, just a few will need water; if it's a hot and sunny period, that will extend to young trees) 3. Walk around the property (the main part, not all 23 hectares of it!) to make sure everything is ok - can be every few days if not daily

What a beautiful space and a wonderful family. Francois, Shahnaz and Arianna were all so lovely and very welcoming and made me feel right at home. Their animals are all so loving and cuddly too. The shepherds hut is cozy and comfortable and I spent the time surrounded by donkeys which was a dream. The perfect place to unwind and escape from it all with the perfect blend of duties and rest. The area is much greener than the south and you are surrounded by oak woodland which is stunning and loads of walking routes nearby and the river to swim in. I didn't want to leave! Thank you so much for a great stay! I hope to return :)

Absolutely loved this sit. Such a beautiful location and Francois and Shanaz were very hospitable and helpful when introducing us to their home and also during the sit. The animals are amazing, we fell in love with the dogs who came on walks with us all the time and we’re so cuddly and friendly. The way of life on the farm was so relaxed and we enjoyed looking after the chickens and collecting eggs. We had everything we needed including use of the car to get into the local village and also staples to cook with. Thankyou for a wonderful experience for me and my daughter.
