Visit the Connecticut countryside & snuggle with 2 mini doxies

Introduction

My husband and I enjoy traveling together, both in the U.S. and abroad. As we both have family members in California, we would like the opportunity to travel to the West Coast with peace of mind that our two beloved dachshunds are being cared for in our absence. We would also like to begin traveling abroad again. Between the pandemic and dachshund ownership, we have not traveled as much as we did pre-COVID. We look forward to finding the right fit, so we're comfortable leaving Bentley and Tilly with trusted caregivers.

Home & location

Enjoy the beautiful surroundings of northwest Connecticut! We live on 5 acres of land — with nature an important element to our property. Hear the birds as you wake up, and the stream flowing across the street. Behind us is a nature preserve. Our home is classic Cape Cod architecture with all the modern features and amenities, including ultra-fast WiFi, high-end kitchen appliances and luxury guest room linens. Our guest room features a queen bed with a pillow top for that perfect night’s sleep. It also has plenty of storage for your personal items. We have soft and plush towels and Molton Brown bath products for use during your stay. Although we don’t have cable, you can watch your personal devices and listen to your favorite music with our Sonos speakers. Our yard features a pea stone gravel area with a teak table and chairs, as well as Adirondack chairs, to enjoy your morning coffee. Our property has beautiful perennial gardens, mature trees and woodlands. Litchfield County is a nature lover’s paradise with tons of trails for walking our two dogs. The area is filled with rivers, streams and lakes and is unrivaled for its natural beauty and tranquility. Our area also has excellent farm stands, restaurants and shops with an emphasis on local products. Whether enjoying a burger at the local tavern, a farm-to-table dinner or ice cream from the much beloved Arethusa Farm, you can enjoy country living while not compromising on quality or variety. We will have a binder of local interests for your use during your time with us. We are also just a text away!

Responsibilities

Our sitter preferences and responsibilities include: * Taking care of two miniature dachshunds (details below) * Watering houseplants and our garden (spring or early fall dates) * Basic pool mainteance (late spring or early fall dates) * Picking up the mail Our dachshunds are very lovable and kind - they love kisses, hugs, and snuggles - but do have specific needs due to their breed, lifestyle and personalities. First, our dogs eat a raw food diet. This is not pre-packaged raw meals for dogs. This is pastured-raised meat we break down for them including organ meat, muscle meat and bone. Any sitter will need to be comfortable handling this type of meat such as liver, heart, tongue, and kidneys. Our dogs thrive on this diet, which also includes a balanced variety of foods such as sweet potatoes, raw quail eggs, sockeye salmon, pumpkin, blueberries, plus more. Dachshunds love to be part of the family and want to be with you as much as possible. They are not as "independent" a breed as others, and they certainly feel a sense of entitlement (albeit usually deserved). They sleep with us and burrow under the blankets, so a sitter will need to be okay with allowing Bentley and Tilly to join them for snuggles and sleep each night. They like to stay cozy and warm, so they are covered with warm blankets and even have a fancy faux fur! Additionally, due to their unique long bodies, we do not allow them to walk up and down the stairs between the first and second floors, nor are they allowed to jump off beds or sofas. This protects their backs and overall physical health. A sitter will need to be okay picking them up (as well as learning the correct way to pick up and carry a dachshund if the breed is new to them). Dachshunds - and our two are no exceptions - have high prey drives, are stubborn with a mind of their own, and love to bark at objects, real or imaginary. A sitter will have to understand these qualities and be okay with these unique characteristics. As we live in a beautiful area surrounded by nature, Bentley and Tilly are able to smell and see animals in our yard, such as deer, woodchucks, birds, and even the occasional bear. A sitter will need to commit to keeping them safe outside (either off-leash in our fenced-in pool area or on a leash in our yard). Further, Bentley and Tilly were both born in the COVID-19 pandemic era (Bentley was born in March 2020 and Tilly was born in May 2022), so they are very used to be being "with their people." We do not leave them alone for long periods of time (although we're trying our best to work on this). The ideal sitter will want to be with our dogs and enjoy their love, curiosity, sense of fun and adventure, and will not want to be away for hours at a time. This breed is also notoriously bad at house training, so they need to go out quite a bit for potty breaks. Dachshunds are prone to overeating and obesity, so it's essential that a sitter is willing to take them on walks each day. Luckily, we live in beautiful surroundings filled with trails, streams, and lakes. This part of Connecticut is a nature lover's paradise, and there is no shortage of options for daily adventures! We use a retractable leash for both dogs, so they can sniff, run, and generally enjoy their time outside. Finally, neither dog is aggressive, and Bentley enjoys the dog park not too far from our home, but Tilly is a bit timid around other dogs as she is small and quite used to her big brother and her human "pawrents" so a sitter will need to be sensitive to this with our dogs. Bentley and Tilly bring joy to our lives each day, and we are protective of their mental and physical health. Our ideal sitter would partner with us in caring for our faithful and loving companions who have earned a prominent place in our home and hearts.

Sitting for Wendy and Billy was truly a pleasure! Their dogs, Bentley and Tilly, are very loving and affectionate and anytime they are awake will just want to spend time with you. The New Milford/New Preston area is very lovely and if you like hiking and finding cute cafes and ice cream shops then you will have a bunch to do! You should be aware that there is very little cell service near the house but they made up for it by having incredibly strong and fast WiFi that reached by the pool. Would happily sit for them again!

It was such a pleasure helping Wendy and Billy take care of their beautiful pups, Tilly and Bentley. We feel so lucky to have had this experience as both pups are just as loving and sweet natured as they seem in the photos - and even more adorable! Wendy and Billy truly went above and beyond to make myself and my partner feel comfortable in their home, including ensuring we could easily take Tilly and Bentley on lots of great walks despite some transportation setbacks on my end. It is lovely spending time with animals who are cared for to the highest quality, and that is certainly the case with these adorable pups. They have so much energy during the day for activities, but snuggle down peacefully at bedtime and are the best cuddle-buddies!! Wendy and Billy were very helpful in taking care of much of the meal prep for the pups in advance of their trip, so that feeding Tilly and Bentley was a simple and enjoyable task. There was also an awesome selection of snacks provided to treat them with. Communication with Wendy was always easy and seamless. In addition to this, Wendy put together a wonderful welcome guide that had an array of local suggestions, from beautiful walks to enjoy with the pups, to delicious local cuisine. The area they live in and the surrounding neighbourhoods are unbelievably picturesque, and the locals were all so welcoming. And if you like to cook like we do, Wendy and Billy have an incredible kitchen to cook in, there is no exaggeration when they say they have high-end kitchenware! They truly have impeccable taste, and were so kind in generously sharing it with us too. Such genuinely lovely people! In the end, we left feeling not only the pleasure of spending time with two adorable and loving dachshunds, but the gift of friendship with Billy and Wendy too. We will miss all four and couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

Brea is a great communicator, on time, reliable and very personable. She is bright and was a pleasure to get to know. She made sure to send us updates even when her phone was on the fritz through her Apple Watch or email. She and Darius took our pups on walks and to the dog park over the 4 days in their care. Brea made it a point to wash the linens and the dishes before we arrived home. We are very grateful to Brea and Darius for caring for Bentley and Tilly!
