The Old Coach House - a rural idyll

Introduction

The Old Coach House is an 19th Century house, nestled in rural Cheshire at the foot of the Peaks. We recently became human parents to a mischievous Airedale Terrier puppy called Treacle. She was born in September 2023 and is already living up to her name - sweet but can be a little sticky at times! She loves being outside. We also have some feathered friends (guinea fowl and aviary birds) who need a small amount of TLC when we're away but, most importantly, we are lucky and privileged to have a home that we feel should be enjoyed not just by ourselves but by others too!

Home & location

The Old Coach House is a five bedroomed period house, sitting in about an acre of land, with magnificent views of the Derbyshire Hills and the Cheshire countryside. It sits in parkland and is quite remote, being about 3 miles from the nearest shops. It is equidistant from Macclesfield and Congleton, each about 4 miles away and Manchester Airport and City Centre can be reached in under an hour by car or from Macclesfield train station. The house is semi-detached, with the other property being owned by the owner's mother. Other neighbours are sufficiently close so as not to feel completely isolated. The house has a large lounge, snug, well-equipped kitchen, conservatory, five bedrooms, three bathrooms and beautiful gardens for relaxing in.

Responsibilities

House With regard to the house, the main responsibility is to maintain a human presence! Although we feel very safe here and have not had any problems, it is helpful to have random activity at the house. Our home is off the beaten track and we are occasionally visited by strangers, usually delivery drivers, who are lost and looking for a neighbouring property. It is good for them to see that the house is not sat empty for long periods of time. We do have regular visitors (a cleaner and a gardener) who come by each week and my mother lives next door so you would not be the only people providing this presence! Pets After losing our beloved Wheaten Terrier, Murphy at the beginning of 2023, we finally took the plunge and became parents to Treacle, an Airedale Terrier, born September 2023. As she is still very much a puppy, albeit a rather large one, she can be very mischievous and needs a firm hand and discipline. There is a separate list of information for Treacle in our Welcome Pack at home. The aviary birds have a scoop of Finch Food (in a bin in the aviary) every few days or so. Sometimes the tray still looks full but it is only empty husks and will need refilling. We change the millet seeds when there are only a few seeds left. These are also in the bin with the Finch Food. If you like wild birds, we have a lot of visiting birds, including goldfinches, nuthatches, woodpeckers. To encourage them, we have a supply of wild bird feed and peanuts, which can be filled as you wish! Please water any house plants and garden plants as required, especially for sits in excess of 2 weeks.

Sue and Bruce are fabulous hosts who ensured that our stay was comfortable and enjoyable. The Old Coach House is simply charming. Each room has its own special character; the kitchen warm and inviting, conservatory bright and airy, the lounge just amazing with its intriguing features and furnishings, and the snug … well that speaks for itself! The guest bedroom in which we stayed was delightful. The garden can only be described as enchanting. To give more detail would be to spoil the experience but suffice to say that the gentle song of the wind chimes backed by the babbling of fountains as you look out over the hills is an experience not to be missed. The location is ideal for those who wish to escape the big smoke but are not looking for total isolation. Walking in this area is varied from fields to canals or fells – all are within easy reach and there are some quaint English country pubs too! As for Murphy, he is affectionate, intelligent and relaxed. Is it that quizzical look that he gives when you start off on a walk or the way he rolls onto his back and just waits… and waits… until you stroke his tum; maybe the way he always leaves you a toy by the door to welcome you in the morning or even his reluctant submission when you wash his muddy paws, that make him so very loveable? Thankyou Sue and Bruce for this opportunity to create such memories. We are really looking forward to the next episode.

Absolutely loved this sit! Sue & Bruce are lovely people and made us feel very welcome in thier beautiful home. Murphy was a dream to look after. He is such a lovely dog and so well behaved. I loved collecting the eggs every morning and saying hello to the chickens! Most of all I enjoyed chilling out in the amazing garden with a cuppa, Murphy by my side watching the wildlife and listening to the musical windchimes. The location is ideal as it's just far enough off the beaten track to enjoy solitude but also only a short drive away from lots of points of interest to visit. Thank you Sue and Bruce for giving us the opportunity to enjoy your beautiful home and Murphy who has left a pawprint on my heart

I can´t write as beautiful as Brittany but I agree to everything she wrote: Murphy is just a sweetheart, I called him my cuddle monster, always trying to be close to you, loves being played with. The house and garden is just great, very peaceful! Good thing Sue wasn´t there during the 2 weeks....I probably would not have fitted into my clothes afterwards!!! Her cooking and all the "treats" she left in the fridge for me...so yummy!!! And on top of that all I met some really nice people there!! So I hope I´ll have the chance to stay with Murphy again

We had a great stay in this amazing house and Murphy is just the cutest dog who we instantly feel in love with. He is playful, full of personality and such a loveable dog. We loved greeting he chooks each morning giving them scraps and in turn collecting the eggs. The house was beautiful and is very unique. We loved experiencing cooking with the special oven (aga) and enjoyed many nights in the snug with a warm fire. This area has some of the best hikes/walks we have experienced in the UK (peaks district) and we were very fortunate to be able to experience these places with the help of Sue providing her car for use during this stay. Sue was extremely hospitable and went out of her way to make us feel comfortable and at home (her cooking was absolutely to die for). We were even able to stay extra nights to work in with our travels. We would highly recommend this housesit to anyone, don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity. We will be keeping in touch with Sue and Bruce and would love to be back to house sit one day or to keep up with life and Murphy. :)
