Spend time in a wonderful Victorian home with 5 sweet cats in Scottsville, Va

Introduction

Spend time in our wonderful town of Scottsville, Virginia! https://www.scottsville.org/ Its a great place for a working stay or vacation. In home fiber optic wifi allows you to work full time while enjoying easy access to tubing/kayaking/fishing on the James River, hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains evenings and weekends or bicycling the local back roads. We live in a historic Victorian home on a hill, overlooking the James River. The town is small (populations 492) but there are plenty of fun things to do. Water sports, hiking trails, farmers market, local brewery, coffee shop, restaurants & retail shops are all within walking distance. And our cats are low maintenance and easy to care for! We have 3 inside/outside cats that come in at night and just require feeding morning and evening. We also have 2 outside semi-feral cats that just need dry food twice a day. The only additional care required is Frontline once a month in the summer only. We also ask you cut the grass during the warm months (takes no more than 30 minutes once a week) and water our plants. We welcome folks coming a little early to get a lay of the land and staying a little later if it helps with your schedule. We both just retired and are welcoming folks into our home so we can do some traveling before we get too old. ;-)

Home & location

Our two- story home is on the Town’s Historic Registry and is approximately 2,400 square feet. It is a 2 bedroom, 2 full bath house with living room, library, formal dining room, craft room, modern kitchen including dishwasher, gas stove/oven, microwave and toaster oven. Completely updated in the past two years, it includes front loading washer and dryer, fiber optic cable, central heating/air, wrap-around porches with outside fan and eating area. We have an outside shower (cool water only) attached to our garage. There is ample parking in the back as well as a picnic table for those summer afternoons. Our yard abuts a wooded area. Our small town is friendly and safe. The grocery store, hardware store and banks are about one mile from the home and the city of Charlottesville, Monticello, University of Virginia lies 18 miles north of us. We are around 45 miles from Shenandoah National Park and the Appalachian Trail and 100 miles from Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

Sarah is three and Traveler is 8, and they love spending their days outside and their nights inside. They are fed twice daily. Sarah gets a half a can of wet cat food (Friskies) twice daily and can also have a dish of dry food if she'd like. Traveler gets a half a can of wet food (Science Diet) mixed with dry cat food twice daily. There is a lovely set of 3 feral cats that hang round the yard and back porch. They are fed twice daily with dry food. If there are leftovers from Sarah and Traveler, we put those outside for the feral pack. There are two Tidy Cats Litterbox systems for the inside cats that need to be scooped daily, with the pad being changed as needed, about every 3 days. One is downstairs in the library and one is upstairs in the studio. There are two rose beds on an irrigation system hooked up to our outside faucet that need to be turned on/off manually, 2-3 times per week. (The roses do NOT need to be watered in the winter.) There are a few perennials and annuals (lavendar and phlox by the backyard rose bushes, entire bed to the right of the large outside AC unit, all the annuals around the back porch and trees/plants on the shower side porch as well as a potted orange tree outside that will need to be watered with a hose or watering can daily in the summer and 2-3 times in the spring and fall. If it rains, it is not necessary to water that day. We have about half a dozen inside plants that will require watering twice a week (Wednesdays & Saturdays). We have a weekly trash service on Wednesdays and recycling pick up service, every other Wednesday.

Fantastic! Stuart and Jen were very thorough and helpful! The house is beautiful and right along the river…the cats are all well behaved, play nice together and very easy to care for! Scottsville is a wonderful town! Also - if you are a hiker or like a walk beside the lake, there is a secret trail that goes about 2 miles one way along the river…just wonderful to to out in nature - and only a short drive into Charlottesville if you want high end grocery and shopping. I highly recommend this sit!! Thank you Stuart and Jen!

Stuart and Jen were so welcoming and kind. They were easy to communicate with, provided thorough instructions and even introduced me to their neighbors. The home is beautiful and comfortable in a small town that has everything you could need within walking distance. Each of the kitties had their own personality and it was fun getting to know them. Traveler won my heart from the moment we met and was my constant companion. It was a very relaxing time and I highly recommend this sit! Thank you, Stuart and Jen!!

This is small town living at its best with wonderful cats. Easily one of my top stays.

First, Stuart and Jen are wonderful people with great communication. We spent time before and after the stay to accommodate our schedules in a way that was mutually beneficial. It was a real treat to get to know them. The cats are mostly outdoor with some of them completely outdoor. They have various personalities, and it didn’t take long to understand the cats’ expectations and nuances. I became good pals with all of them by the end of the stay, especially one of them who came indoors every night. The responsibilities with them are straightforward, well-documented, and there were no surprises. Taking care of the plants and home was standard. As a solo traveller working remotely, the internet is stellar and accommodations very comfortable. The town is very small, but has a ton of history, and the people I met in Scottsville were particularly friendly and welcoming. I’d sometimes work out of the local cafe, and the small brewery is arguably the best place to meet locals. The area is within a short drive to Charlottesville, many wineries, breweries, and historic sites. Within reach of a day trip is Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Tunnel, the City of Richmond… and even more breweries and wineries. I absolutely want the opportunity to stay here again, and frankly would love to hear about others’ experiences here too!

I've been house sitting since August 2019, with over 20 house sits. This was one of my top 3 favorite sits. It was relaxing, full of adventures, golfing, fishing and exploring. Stuart and Jen stocked more than enough pet food, toilet paper and paper towels for my 4 1/2 month visit. Seems like a small thing, but I've had to restock all of the above during all my extended house sits. The house is perfectly located on a small hill over looking downtown Scottsville. Great wrap around porch for morning coffee, watching Scottsville waking up and reading any time. Also the very best location for 4th of July fireworks. The fireworks are shot off over the James river right in front of the house. The guest bedroom and bed are very comfortable. Lots of 1 day exploring, including 4 Presidents homes, several civil war battle fields and museums, Luray caverns, the Shenandoah National Park, George Washington National Forest, Blue Ridge Mountains and so much more. Stuart and Jen are super easy to work with and very, very hospitable. I strongly recommend this as a future house sit.
