Hudson Valley, NY House Sit For 2 Dogs

Introduction

Hi there. We are a married couple in our late sixties. My husband is a Psychotherapist working part-time in his private practice, whilst I am retired after a 30-year career in the publishing industry. We would feel privileged to welcome genuine animal lovers into our home to care for our house and pets during our absence. Our first post on THS was a huge success so we feel confident listing our home and pets again. Our dogs are very sweet and affectionate, but can sometimes be rambunctious, especially first thing in the morning when they want to go out. Finley is "iffy" with other dogs, so for that reason and in an abundance of caution, I'm afraid we cannot accept applications from sitters with other pets or very young children.

Home & location

We are located in the beautiful Hudson Valley area of New York State on a quiet country road, enjoying 4 ½ acres of fenced-in land. There is a fabulous British Café and Deli a mere ½ mile from our house with more restaurants and grocery stores about 10 minutes further out by car. We are close to stunning hiking trails, quaint villages offering fine dining, great shopping, and interesting antique stores, as well as being only a 90-minute drive into NYC. The world-famous Omega Institute is but a 15-minute drive away as is the equally renowned Culinary Institute of America. Vassar College can be reached in under 30 minutes. A car is a necessity. Our property comprises four acres of fenced paddocks, and a fully fenced-in backyard for our dogs. Our home is a comfortable, older air-conditioned farmhouse that has been updated and extended over the years. Our sitter(s) will have full use of the ground floor of our home consisting of a guest bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a bathroom, and the usual living spaces. The yard area has a nice-sized deck with outdoor dining furniture and loads of space to safely play ball with the dogs.

Responsibilities

Time and experience have taught us to work smarter, not harder when it comes to caring for our pets so the dogs' room opens directly out to the fully fenced-in backyard. Ridley and Finley are fed twice each day and yet despite contributing zero dollars to their well-being and upkeep, they like to think they own us - that's because they know we love them to pieces. They love company so we need our house sitters to want to spend time with them. They are let out into the backyard as often as possible given weather conditions. We never leave them outside and unattended if we leave the property. When we leave them home alone they are crated in their room. They love to walk out, always on a leash, but they take a little while to settle down to walk nicely as they get so excited at the mere prospect of an outing. They love to play in the backyard. Ridley has a high prey drive and will play ball longer than is good for her, especially in hot weather. Finley will play for a few minutes and then wander off on his own; he much prefers to be cuddled and stroked than chase a ball. We Poo pick every day as keeping our home and property clean and tidy is very important to us. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but please be warned that Ridley and Finley are both wicked liars. It's true. They will try to convince you that it's 6 pm and therefore dinner time when it might only be 5 pm, and they will jump on the furniture and look at you as though we let them do it all the time; we don't. They do, however, respond to a firm; OFF! Finley will drink your tea or coffee if he thinks you're not watching, and Ridley will try to make you believe she's allowed to play ball inside the house; not true! The dogs are crated at night in their room, but we leave their crate doors open during the day as sometimes they want their alone time. Since they are accustomed to my being home most of the time we don't want them left alone for more than 5 hours, max. The dogs love people and attention but don't always have the best manners so our sitters must have experience and confidence in handling large, occasionally loud, rambunctious dogs. They both respond well to a firm, but kind hand. It would be best for all if the sitter(s) were available to arrive a day before we leave so we can show them the ropes. If the weather is particularly hot, it would be fabulous if the sitter(s) would water the plants. In closing, we love our home and property and put in the time and effort to keep our place clean and well-maintained. We want our sitters to feel at home and comfortable during their stay so ask only that our home is left in the condition it’s found. Thank you for considering our listing.

Bernadette and Joe are really sweet hosts and their home and dogs reflect that. They went out of their way to give us space and make sure we were comfortable while taking care of Ridley and Finley. These two dogs have a lot of personality. They love to play and get attention and affection. Between the beautiful setting, comfortable home, fun dogs and kind hosts I definitely recommend taking the opportunity if you get one.
