The house is a small restored granite cottage, on 1 hectare of land. The dogs and cats will share the space with you; the other animals are in paddocks around the land. We are off-grid, so you will need to be comfortable with a rustic setting - it's a walk up the track to your car, and we have a compost toilet. We do have hot running water and wifi!! We enjoy a breathtaking view of the Serra da Estrella - sitting on the kitchen doorstop, watching the swallows swoop through the vast sky as the light shifts on the hills opposite is a soul-recalibrating experience. Access is via a short dirt track from the main road. We're 5 minutes drive from the beautiful river beaches on the Alva (Sandomil and Vila Cova da Coelheira are the closest), on the edge of a friendly village with shop, cafe and swimming pool, and 15 minutes from the shops and amenities of Seia. We're a short distance from many beautiful walking trails in the national park. You'll be staying in our cosy stone cottage, lovingly restored with hot shower, unlimited wifi, and fully equipped kitchen. We have a compost toilet (simple to use!), big outside terrace and spacious living area. Our home is well-loved and lived in. Guests always comment on how relaxed they feel in the space, and how easily the simple daily routine emerges.
Show more...Responsibilities
Daily chores are feeding the animals, letting the chickens and goats out of their stables, and watering the garden. In the evening the chickens and goats are put away. We also ask that you keep an eye on the dogs (putting them in the house after their morning run to avoid them wandering off) and take them for a walk each day. Watering the garden is done with the hose, easily reachable. Bonus tasks: Snuggles with the cats are unavoidable, and the dogs will be very happy if you want to throw a ball for them or just spoil them with tummy rubs!

I can’t even express how much fun I had in complete isolation with the animals on the farm. This was my first THS experience and I’m so glad Madeleine and Nick selected me. Their pups, cats, chickens, sheep, goat AND pig were so loving! The instructions were detailed and thorough and in case of an emergency, they provided additional resources for me. Overall, everything that I needed was available and they were just a text away. I highly recommend house/pet sitting for them and I look forward to helping them in the future. Their animals are SO independent and they love to relax.

Ahh I miss this little farm housesit so so much! The absolute best time I had in the 2.5 months I was in Portugal. Madeleine and her family are so kind and have built such an amazing oasis with the most lovely animals. I cried when I left, they all held such a special place in my heart and I will treasure the memories with all of them forever. Ludo is such a big hunk of love and happily serves as the farm protector, Nevy is just a sweet little lovebug who will be happiest with a brush and belly rubs while gazing lovingly into your eyes, and little Echo is a ball of loving energy and just wants to be your sidekick most of the time. The kitties are the sweetest I've ever met, Pedro loves his nightly cuddles in bed almost as much as I did :) Meg is just a tiny black panther with the biggest personality and very patient disposition. Leo is just adorable and inquisitive who also likes to be the occasional lap cat as well especially when relaxing on the couch, they all also enjoy a good brush and of course kitty treats! Dolly the pig is such a happy girl, a little skittish at first but she warms up fast and will run towards you and wag her little tail at mealtime. The chickens and ducks are so fun to watch them enjoy their tub baths and munch on garden scraps and fresh grass brought to them. The goats and sheep are hysterical, they are very smart and Mr Abraham is the king of the herd, he has quite the sense of humor and enjoys lovingly bumping you along if you're too slow walking with the food, but he is a gentle giant who likes a good brush as well as a few of the other goats enjoy too. The house itself is so cozy and peaceful, and the views are incredible, such an amazing experience thank you Madeleine for sharing your home and furbabies with me <3

Madeline and Nick have built a lovely little finca out in the hills of the Serra Estrella. It is peaceful, beautiful and their animals are a complete delight. The schedule is quite easy, they get fed twice a day around 8:00 and 20:00 and then most of them kind of do their own thing. Nevy is sweet and will ask for belly rubs all day, Ludo seems to have a part time job elsewhere- enjoy him when he’s there and don’t worry when he’s gone. Pedro the cat likes to help you work, is somewhat opinionated and a champion cuddler, Meg is the worlds tiniest panther who loves a good scratch, and Leo is all of the above and will sit with you to watch the sun set. The goats and sheep are hilarious, have a fondness for willow and music. They were a little skittish at first but once they give them a good scratch behind the horns they’ll totally accept you into the herd. The chickens and pig, super easy, just feed and walk away. They appreciate your leftovers and the chickens especially appreciate a good bug or two if you happen to be gardening. The area is beautiful, lots of little historic villages, great hikes and river beaches. I highly recommend this sit and greatly appreciate Madeline and Nick for their warm welcome and for sharing their furry family with me.
