Comfortable Island Retreat on the Coast of Maine with a very lovable Labradoodle

Introduction

We are a (mostly) retired couple who spent our careers in the field of education. My husband worked mainly in college admissions and I did college counseling in private schools. We both still do a bit of consulting, but when we are not enjoying living on the coast of Maine, we love spending time in France where we have a second home. We are empty nesters who enjoy island walks, reading, biking and entertaining family and friends. While we have been relying on wonderful friends to care for Lola while we are away in France, we would love to be able to spend slightly longer periods of time there while sitters enjoy our beautiful home in Maine.

Home & location

Our home is located on an island in Casco Bay and is just a ten minute drive from the lovely village of Yarmouth, Maine. Portland is less than thirty minutes away and LL Bean and Freeport Outlets just fifteen. Our island is accessed by a causeway and is home to about 50 year round homes as well as seasonal cottages. Our home was designed by a Portland architect and built in 2006. It is spacious and comfortable and has several porches as well as a large deck. Sitters stay in the guest room on the first floor which has a king sized four poster cherry bed. There is newly renovated full bath just across the hall. The kitchen has everything you might need including a gas stove, oven, microwave, new refrigerator and huge island with four barstools. The downstairs is all open concept with high ceilings and huge windows which let in plenty of light. Dining room and living room furnished with Maine Cottage furniture. Our house sits at the end of a private road on a half acre and has an Invisible Fence system. It is private and tranquil. There are miles of incredible walking trails within moments of our front door. There is a Preserve at the north end of the island which is accessed by a quiet dirt road just steps away and the West Side Trail which runs the length of Cousins Island and connects all the way to the mainland can be joined just on the other side of the causeway.

Responsibilities

Lola is a very easy and lovable dog! We normally take her for a 45 minute to an hour long walk in the Preserve every day, much of which she enjoys off-leash so she can sniff to her heart's content. She is very friendly with other dogs and people, but can sometimes get a little nervous around young children (who tend to move unpredictably!). She loves being near us and knowing we are around. As you can see from the pictures, she also loves soft things and spends most of her day on that red sofa looking out the window and waiting for a squirrel or deer to walk by. Lola also enjoys sleeping on the bed if she is welcomed to do so! She eats twice a day and gets one pill a day wrapped in cheese. We do have a small number of house plants, most of which seem to thrive on a bit of neglect - so this is a low pressure plan watering situation.

I had a wonderful time housesitting for Katherine and Steve at their home on picturesque Littlejohn Island. It’s a little piece heaven for nature lovers like myself as there were always deer and turkey doing their daily stroll through the yard. Lola is the absolute sweetest dog and delightful companionship. The proximity to the ocean and the nearby nature paths was probably my favorite part of this sit, taking long walks with Lola everyday. She stays near and is so friendly with other dogs, yet always keeping the local squirrels in their place :) Communication with Katherine was easy, I was left instructions and we had open dialogue as weather events, etc. transpired and she kept me well informed with everything I needed to know. I totally recommend sitting for Lola if you get the opportunity! I will miss her!
