Rural house in the Charente with four dogs, Alfie, Archie, Nero and Milo

Introduction

I live with my partner Justin and my four dogs, we moved to the Charente department of France in December 2010. I first came to France when I was eleven and it had been my long term dream to be able to move and live in France in this gorgeous part of the world. The Charente is an agricultural department, growing corn, barley, wheat, oats, sunflowers and maize. We see lots of tractors, combine harvesters etc and apart from many tourists throughout the Summer it is a very tranquil beautiful part of France. The house is set in a hectare of mown field with many fruit trees, most of which we have planted ourselves. I still have two sons and various friends in the UK, I want to be able to spend time with them when I visit.

Home & location

When we moved to France my present house was totally inhabitable, it had been empty for about 35 years. Over time we have renovated, with the help of french artisans, to create my dream home, a large living area and combined kitchen, lots of space for us and the hounds. A car is a must, the house is 6kms from my local market town of Chalais, with supermarkets, Intermarche and Lidl, petrol station, many bakers, pharmacy, banks and all the day to day requirements. The beautiful village of Aubeterre with its monolithic church is 20 mins away, Riberac in the Dordogne has a great market on a Friday, Chalais market on a Monday is not as large. The west coast of France is just over an hour away, there are many stunning beaches along the coast line. Bordeaux is about an hour and a half away, a fabulous vibrant city. St Emilion, famous for excellent wines is also about an hour away, much of this south west area is a world renowned viticultural area. Canoes can be rented locally throughout the summer from Aubeterre or St Aulaye. I would like a non-smoker please.

Responsibilities

I have four gorgeous labradors and labrador crosses, Alfie and my three rescues, Archie, Nero and Milo. I am really looking for someone who will love and adore my dogs like myself, they are friendly dogs, love a cuddle and are happy to sit on laps. The sofas in the kitchen area are predominantly used by them but I draw the line at them sitting on the sofas in the lounge. There is a gate at the bottom of the stairs as I prefer them not to wander upstairs. I do not take them for walks as there is enough land around the house for them to play, chase each other or in the case of the oldies to pop out to do their business and return to a comfy bed. Nero, my second rescue dog came to me at the end of February 2020, he is a very timid and scared dog, he relies on Alfie and is always with him and very unsettled if they are not together whether it be inside or outside. I do not know what happened in his life but he is more scared of men and will only come close for food. He is far better now with me than when he first arrived but I wouldn't change him for the world. I don't mind how long it might take for him to have confidence in us but his quality of life is far better here than stuck in a concrete kennel! He continues to be more scared of men.......except when they will happily spend time outside with him with the tennis ball and a Chuckit. The two youngest, Nero and Milo love to play, they can be quite rough at times so I do keep a watchful eye on them. Milo came as a puppy of 8 weeks so is a happy pup, loves cuddles with humans but can irritate Archie outside by chasing and trying to nibble his legs, Archie tends to bark at him but is so placid it has little effect. Again I leave Archie inside away from him at certain times of the day for some peace and quiet. I will be having him neutered in the near future, once he has passed his second birthday. I try not to leave them for more than four hours, but sometimes it may be up to 6 hours if we have had to travel further afield for Drs appointments or we have gone to the coast. When I go out or I put them to bed at night they always stay in their dormitory. The local vets are a 15 minute drive away, it goes without saying that should you need to take one or more to the vet, I would reimburse any fees if paid. I would prefer a sitter to arrive the day before we would go away so that you can meet my dogs and I can show you their feeding regime and medications. You are very welcome to stay the night we get back if you have a distance to travel yourself/ yourselves. Bearing in mind some of my dogs are elderly I think a couple or single person, female, to house sit is the best option. I would like the outside plants watered during the time I am away, Summer and particularly during dry spells, I have a watering system for the small vegetable patch at the road side of the house.

Caroline and Justin were superb hosts. From the moment we arrived until we said goodbye we felt at home and fully informed. Of course the highlight were the four boys. Each had their own personality but loved each other. From Alfie, the patriarch to beautiful Archie to the young ones, Nero and Milo. They were all so lovely to look after.

I had such a lovely time petsitting Caroline and Justin’s Labradors. Alfie, Archie, Nero, and Milo were all well-behaved fun dogs. They love to play fetch with the chuckit and rugby ball in the garden then, once their energy is spent, cuddle on the couch. The boys are all well trained and will sit, stay, and loose their toys (mostly) on command. With established morning and tea time routines, they will definitely let you know when it’s time to use the loo, eat, and play. They were so entertaining and lovable that I miss them already. Caroline and Justin are wonderful. They welcomed me the evening before their departure with a home cooked meal and went over everything needed for the boys. It was just such a pleasure getting to know them. Their home and the surrounding area are perfect. The location is out in the beautiful countryside, but still very close grocery shopping and some cute towns for exploring. I really can’t recommend them enough and would definitely love to sit for them again in the future.

We just loved looking after Caroline & Justin’s four lovely labradors, Alfie, Archie, Nero & Milo. They were an absolute delight to be with, very easy to manage, and very friendly to everyone. The large house is lovely and quiet, (situated just outside of a lovely village, Chalais), with a great kitchen and a modern interior. Really a treat to stay in such a quality home. Thanks Caroline & Justin for allowing us to share your home and your hounds! Highly recommended housesit!
