In Home - House/Pet Sitter needed for small sweet blind dog.

Introduction

Hello. My name is Ann Allwein. My husband (Chris) and I are grandparents to 4, soon to be 5! We love spending time with our grown kids, grandkids and friends. We both like to swim, bike, run and most of all Travel, which is why we signed up for Trusted Housesitters. We currently have 1 dog, Brenden, he's a rescue. We've had him for a little over a year. He's a blind mixed breed, about 15 lbs., 11 yrs old and pretty much deaf as well. He is on medicine for congestive heart failure, but what a sweetheart. He loves to snuggle and will let you know when he needs to go out.

Home & location

We live in Old Historic Annville. There are many points of interest within walking distance of our home. Rotunda Brothers Brewery, Corvette Bar & Grill, Med 101 (Mediteranean), Swatara Coffee Shop, J&S Pizza, Healthcheck Smoothie Bar, Christine Shirlely Shoppe (cute clothing) and even our very own Movie Theatre, The Allen https://www.allentheatre.com/. Quittie Park Nature Trail and the beautiful Lebanon Valley College Campus. Our House is three bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, with a finished basement. We live in a development near the local High School. We have a decent sized yard, but it's not fenced. We have a deck and patio with fire table and chairs outback. There is a walking path in our neighborhood that connects with the walking path in the neighborhood across the street. So plenty of exercise to be had. For those that enjoy staying in, we have a treadmill, exercise bike, and weight lifting equipment in our home gym. Hershey and all of its attractions are only a 15 min. drive. Scenic Mt. Gretna with lots of hiking trails, the Governor Dick Tower and the famous Jigger Shop (delicious ice cream creations) is a 10 min. drive. Philadelphia PA is a 1.5 hour drive and Baltimore MD about a 2 hour drive.

Responsibilities

We rescued Brenden a year ago, he is 11 yrs old and blind, takes 3 pills for congestive heart failure. Unfortnunately it makes him drink more, which means he has to pee more. He will let you know, he cries, pretty much every 4 hours to go outside. When taking him out, please put his reflective harness on, especially at night. You have to carry him out and stand outside and watch him, for some reason, he always heads toward the road. If you feel more comfortable, you can put him on the leash and take him out. He can do the steps in front of the house, but he rarely goes to the correct side to go in the door. Always heads toward the corner, or the opposite side with the potential of falling off the stoop. His typical day is up at 5:30 and out, comes in, gets his medication. He gets fed (he's really picky, so I feed him whatever I can get him to eat), and he'll either go lie down or want to lie on a lap. He goes out pretty much every 4 hours. We don't have a regular routine with taking him for walks. We have, but they take forever, with being blind, he walks slowly and smells everything. In the evening he is fed again and needs to take 2 more pills. He does like to play with his toys, you can't throw them obviously, but he plays tug, he sounds viscious, but he's not. We typically take him out around 10pm for the last time and go to bed. He sleeps in bed with us, between us. Like I previously mentioned, he'll cry when he needs to go out.

This was a short but very sweet sit with a small butt very sweet Dog. Bren is very easy to look after he does have some medication but he is basically a couch potato. I love him daily and will think of him often! The house is great and the neighbourhood is fantastic. It’s lovely to be out in the countryside. Highly recommend recommended to anybody.

Ann was a great communicator and very friendly. Very low stress and a quick responder. She left thorough directions. Her home was lovely and I liked the area, including the cute little town center. Bren was a very good boy. He mostly just napped on the couch. When he needed to go out for a walk or to pee it was very obvious and he ate his food and medicine without too much trouble. I would recommend this sit to anyone interested in a calm stay in rural PA!
